Everyone\u2019s career journey is different and how each person measures his or her own success is unique. But once you find yourself \u201cthere,\u201d the place you dreamed of achieving, you may find that staying there is a challenge. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
No matter how good you are, there is always someone who\nthink he or she could be better. It\u2019s important for you, as a senior leader, to\nunderstand who is in the boat with you and who is trying to sink you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
My experience as shown me what to keep in mind:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
1 The beginning is not the end. Where you start from is not\nwhere you stay for very long. When there are opportunities to do other things,\nyou are the one who determines what you want to do and how high you want to go.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n
2 Put a lot of effort into making changes and moving. You\u2019ll\nneed tenacity to get up and go. The process is yours \u2013 you drive it and manage\nit.\u00a0 <\/p>\n\n\n\n
3 You\u2019ll need a plan. Keep changing and moving and\nadjusting. Remember, if you are not moving up, you are staying still. If you\nfind yourself going down, keep moving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
4 People matter. No matter how much you achieve, others have\nmore to contribute and it\u2019s better to make friends than enemies. Don\u2019t turn\npeople off by arrogance. Bring people up with you \u2013 remember, people on the\nground can bring you down. Be kind. Nurture a strong network.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
5 Stay focused on your goals. Not everything is important.\nKeep in mind there is always something new to learn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
6 Travel light. Maintain your networks and relationships,\nbut always assess the situation to determine whether the people you have fit\nthe open roles. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
7 Keep your integrity intact. Never ever risk your\ncharacter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
8 Network, network, network. Decide the boards and\ncommittees where you are comfortable and that offer you value. The more you get\nout there, the more you learn, which you can bring back to your own\norganization. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Leading is not easy, but it is rewarding. If you remember\nwhere you came from and the people who helped you along the way and treat\neveryone accordingly, it will go a long way toward solidifying your position. <\/p>\n<\/body>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
